Disaster Relief

 

 

Tsunami 2004:
One of the worst natural disasters in the world hit Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives in 2004 December.
This led to a massive rebuilding exercise which is

still on-going.

 

 

 

 

 

Pakistan Earthquake:
In October, 2005 the region was shaken again by a strong earthquake which completely destroyed parts of northern Pakistan and India. Again relief efforts are on-going while rebuilding the flattened landscape will take many

years more.

 

 

 

 

 

ToolBox Training / CapNet Awareness Session was held at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). 22 water professionals from Sri Lanka attended the

session.

 

 
 

 

 

November 2007:11th RC Meeting in
Bangalore, India
 
The 11th Meeting of GWP South Asia Regional Council was held on November 2nd in  BangaloreThe Regional Council Members also attended a Synthesis Meeting on the IWRM Dialogues undertaken by CWPs in 2006-07. The meeting involved presentations by CWP Chairs/Representatives and Consultants (who independently evaluated the Dialogues undertaken by their respective CWP). Mr. Emilio Gabbrielli (Executive Secretary) and Dr. Mercy Dikito Wachtmeister (Network Officer) from GWPO participated at the sessions. 
 
April 2007:10th RC Meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan

 

 

The 10th Meeting of GWP South Asia Regional Council was held on April 21st and 22nd in Islamabad. Chairs of Country Water Partnerships, who were participants at the South Asia Water Utility Network meeting arranged jointly by the Asian Development Bank and GWP on 23rd and 24th April were invited to participate at the RC sessions on the 22nd April. The RC meeting was chaired by Mr. Suresh Prabhu the new Chair GWP-SAS.

The Chair welcomed Dr.Ainun Nishat from Bangladesh, Mr. Karma Chhophel and Ms. Dimple Thapa from Bhutan, Dr. Veena Khanduri from India,  Dr. Karuna Onta from Nepal and Mr. D. C. S. Elakanda from Sri Lanka as new members of the RC. He thanked outgoing members for their services to the RC over the last two years.

Some outcomes of the meeting :-

 

 

1.       A Joint Inter Regional Meeting of GWP South Asia, South-East Asia and China to be held back to back with the GWP. Steering Committee Meeting in November in Manila.
 

2.       Transfer of Regional Office to India to be expedited, deadline of September 2007, With Host Institution and Regional Office located in Bangalore.
 

3.       While budget of CWP for 2007 had more than doubled this year, further proposals for funding were encouraged by GWPO for an Extended Dialogues Programme to be undertaken by CWP from July to December 2007. It was indicated an amount of US$ 100,000/- was available for this purpose and if utilized would enable the GWP-SAS budget for 2007 to top US$ 700,000.
 

4.       CWP accreditation and enrolment of new partners to be done using new partners application form. CWP needing legal recognition to be registered under suitable law in each country.
 

5.       Maldives and Afghanistan to be invited to join GWP – South Asia.                                                                                                                                

6.       Dr. Emillio Gabbrielli (Executive Secretary,GWPO) and Dr. Mercy Dikito Wachtmeister (Network Officer) participated at the sessions.

South Asia Water Utility Network (SAWUN)

 

 

The 2nd meeting of the South Asia Water Utility Network, a joint effort of GWP and ADB was held on 23rd and 24th April in Islamabad. Formal launching of the network with over 50 participants representing water utilities in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka took place on 24th April.

 

 

 

 

Inter Regional Meeting

 

 

The Joint Inter Regional Meeting of partners of GWP South Asia, South East Asia and China is scheduled to be held on 24th and 25th November in Manila, back to back with the GWP Steering Committee meeting on 26th and 27th November. Themes related to Climate change,  Access to Water and related areas will be addressed with sharing of experiences and  best practices among the regions.

 

 

 

 

3rd General Assembly

 

 

The 3rd General Assembly of GWP South Asia was held in Hotel Dolphin, Waikkal, Sri Lanka on 2nd December 2006. The General Assembly was held back to back with the 9th RC meeting and Round Tables on Ground Water and Access to Water held on 3rd and 4th December 2006. Over 50 participants including 35 from foreign partner countries attended the Round Tables.

 

 

 

 

New Chair GWP-SAS

 

 

Mr. Suresh Prabhu a Lok Sabha Member of India was inducted as the new chair of GWP South Asia which effect from 1st January 2007. Action is being persued to transfer the Regional Office to India in early 2007.

 

 

 

 

GWP 10th Anniversary Celebrations

 

 

Regional Chair and Co-ordinator-South Asia, CWP Chairs and selected Chairs from Area Water Partnerships represented South Asia at the GWP 10th Anniversary and Consulting Partners Meeting in Stockholm during 15th – 22nd August 2006.

 

 

 

 

IWRM Dialogue Progrmme

 

 

A sequel to the 10th Anniversary Meetings in Stockholm was preparation work on the IWRM Dialogues Programme to be undertaken by South Asia from September 2006 to June 2007. South Asia successfully presented proposals to the value of over US$ 250,000/= covering programmes to be implemented in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and India from September 2006 through June 2007.

 

 

 

 

Women and Water Network (WWN)

 

 

Women and Water Network of South Asia held its third regional meeting of country coordinators and representatives on December 27, 2005 at Islamabad. This event was held just before the RC meeting on December 28 and 29.               Read More>>

 

 

 

 

 

 

There has been much attention in recent times on Area Water Partnerships in South Asia. 2005 saw two region-wide studies of these local-level institutions to assess the function and activities and the future direction of AWPs.
